The International Symposia on Model Estuaries have been dedicated to the discussion of advanced themes on estuarine systems. The Organizing Committee of 6th International Symposium on Model Estuaries is pleased to announce that the next meeting will be held at Rio Data Center, PUC-Rio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, during the period 17 to 21 May, 1999.
The 6th Symposium will focus on the Biogeochemistry of Tropical Estuaries: Human and Natural Changes, although relevant contributions on temperate estuaries shall also be considered for presentation.
Innovative approaches and recent investigations related to organic and inorganic geochemistry, geochronology, dynamics, modelling, water-atmosphere and water-sediment interactions, as well as new analytical techniques and technologies for estuarine studies will find high interest. Both oral and poster presentations are invited.

The Scientific Program will consist of invited lectures (40 min) and submitted contributions scheduled either for oral (20 min) or poster presentation (1.40 m width x 1.00 m height). Papers may include conclusions derived from experimental results, observational and model-based studies concerning estuarine systems. English will be the official language of the Symposium.
Those intending to submit a paper or participate in the Symposium should fill and return the notice of intent attached to this leaflet before November 30, 1998.

Submission of abstracts
Authors should submit an abstract of 300-400 words typed single-spaced on one side of a A4 white paper ( 29.7 x 21.0 cm ) with margins of 2.5 cm. The title should be typed in capital letters followed by the full name and postal address of authors; the name of the author that will present the paper should be underlined.
Submission of abstracts on disk or attached in e-mail message are encouraged. In these cases, the abstract should be prepared using a version of "Word for Windows".
The original plus two copies of the printed abstract, the disk or the e-mail attached World file should be send until November 30, 1998 to the:

The City of Rio de Janeiro
Sprawling across a tip of land between granite mountains and the South Atlantic Ocean, Rio de Janeiro is an unique city in the world, encompassing white sand beaches and neighboring tropical forests. Rio is located at the southern extreme of the tropic zone and its average mean temperature is 23ºC.
Beside Rio’s traditional postcards, like Corcovado Peak, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Guanabara Bay, Copacabana Beach and Tijuca Forest (the World’s biggest urban tropical forest), the city tell its own colourful history and way of life through its museums, landmarks and historical buildings.
The City is also a prominent research center on environmental, technological and biomedical branches, presenting a large number of private and public universities and research institutions.
The Cariocas, as the natives of this city are called, posses a sort of contagious informality that seems to make everyone feel at home. To be a Carioca is a happy, irreverent, warmth state of spirit, which may possibly surprise visitors.
