On behalf of the Scientific Committee and the various institutions and companies that have made this meeting possible, I welcome you to the Fourth Latin-American Symposium on Biomedical, Biopharmaceutical, and Industrial Applications of Capillary Electrophoresis. At the request and encouraging support of many Latin-American scientists, we decided to continue these series of meetings that were started in Chile, in 1995, emphasizing applications of capillary electrophoresis for the analysis of substances of importance to industries, the life sciences and the biomedical community.

In planning this symposium, the Scientific Committee believes that this fourth meeting will provide up-to-date information on the subject area for its participants through the scientific and technical sessions, panel discussions, and instrument demonstrations which will present the most recent advances and applications of CE as a method in the separation sciences. This symposium is bringing to light the growing trend of applying CE in the clinical and pharmaceutical sciences. In addition, I hope for a continued and future exchange of information between Latin-American scientists and their Australian, Asian, European, and North-American colleagues in the field of capillary electrophoresis.

Em nome do Comitê Científico e das várias instituições e companhias que tornaram possível este simpósio, você está cordialmente convidado a participar do 4° Simpósio Latino-Americano de Eletroforese Capilar (CE) em Aplicações Biomédicas, Farmacêuticas e Industriais. Com o apoio encorajador de vários cientistas latino-americanos, nós decidimos continuar esta série de eventos iniciados no Chile em 1995, enfatizando aplicações de eletroforese capilar para a análise de substâncias de importância industrial, biomédica e farmacêutica.

Ao planejar o quarto simpósio, o Comitê Científico acredita que o evento trará informações atualizadas sobre eletroforese capilar a seus participantes, através das palestras científicas e técnicas, discussão de painéis e exposição de equipamentos, mostrando os avanços mais recentes e aplicações de CE na área das ciências de separação, com ênfase em aplicações clínicas e farmacêuticas. Adicionalmente, faço votos para que haja hoje e sempre um intercâmbio contínuo de informações entre os cientistas latino-americanos e os cientistas da Austrália, Ásia, Europa, Estados Unidos no campo da eletroforese capilar.

São Paulo

São Paulo is one of the most important cities in Latin-America and a first-class one. It is known as the ‘New York’ of South America. Located in southeastern of Brazil, is the largest city in Brazil and South America with a population exceeding 15 millions inhabitants. São Paulo is the financial center of Brazil and the commercial center for a variety of products, particularly coffee. São Paulo’s international infrastructure includes first-class hotels and worldly restaurants because of its large cosmopolitan population. It is home to immigrants from all over the world and because of this ethnic mix of people with different habits, languages and religions, visitors feel so welcome in this unforgettable city. This is also certainly why, in recent years, the number of events taking place in São Paulo has multiplied and tourism is flourishing.

São Paulo is excitement. It is considered a city with a gigantic party, to which you have a standing invitation. A city for all ages and seasons. A city to enjoy and have fun. São Paulo’s attractions are diversified. Many theaters, museums, parks, historic sites, and elegant shopping centers are quite an entertainment. Worth visiting are Instituto Butantã, a research center on snake poison, the beautiful gardens of Jardim Botânico, the municipal zoo and the lions of Simba Safari. An incredible wide choice of finest nightclubs and discos are available to listen and dance to the infectious melodies and rhythms of the samba and bossa nova, as well as other incomparable Brazilian music. Famous entertainers such as João Gilberto, Roberto Carlos, Chico Buarque de Holanda, and Antonio Carlos Jobim (who created the score for the film Black Orpheus) have exported their wonderful melodies to all over the world. São Paulo has also a rich folk music tradition that synthesizes elements of African and Portuguese traditional music. Heitor Villa-Lobos is considered perhaps the most gifted Brazilian composer. His works are based largely on Brazilian folk themes. The Brazilian soprano Bidu Sayão has been a foremost interpreter of his music.

People in São Paulo, and throughout Brazil, vibrate when playing or watching a soccer game. It is a national obsession and the national team have conquered four times the world championship. Many players have become worldwide celebrities, in particular Edson Arantes do Nascimento as with love they call him the King ‘Pelé’. Some travelers consider Paulistanos (as the São Paulo city natives are known) to be the most fun people to be around (full of happiness and passion in everything they do), and the city is one of the most enjoyable destinations in the world to visit. São Paulo rests on an elevated plateau only 40 miles from the coastline, so it can be a quick getaway from the effervescent downtown to a warmest weather and a blue ocean. For international conventions, São Paulo is undoubtedly the best location in Latin-America.

All the Symposium activities will be held at the spacious and luxurious five stars Meliá Hotel & WTC Convention Center, located near downtown.

São Paulo’s climate is humid and the average temperature range from 17^o to 24^o C (63^o to 75^o F). Average annual precipitation in São Paulo is less than 1000 mm (about 40 in). December is usually a pleasant time of the year.

Over the past fifteen years, capillary electrophoresis has become a powerful alternative technique for the separation and analysis of ionic compounds of industrial, pharmaceutical, cosmetological, clinical and environmental interest. With the use of a capillary as the migration channel, electrophoresis evolved from a technique of intense manipulation to an instrumental format, presenting remarkable characteristics such as short analysis time, high resolution power and high efficiency. Several important classes of compounds are eligible for analysis by capillary electrophoresis including biomolecules (aminoacids, proteins, nucleotides , PCR and DNA fragments, oligossacharides), pharmaceutical compounds, metabolites in urine and plasma, cosmetic fragrances and hydrolysates, milk and meat derivatives, food additives, polymers, pesticides, small ions, etc. With a large number of publications since the implementation of the technique in 1979, capillary electrophoresis has conquered a position of merit in the separation science as one of the most versatile and resourceful techniques.

Nos últimos quinze anos, a eletroforese capilar vem captando a atenção da comunidade científica, como uma poderosa técnica alternativa à cromatografia para a separação e análise de compostos iônicos e moléculas ionizáveis de interesse industrial, farmacêutico, cosmético, clínico e ambiental. Com o uso de um capilar como canal de migração, a eletroforese evoluiu de uma técnica de intensa manipulação experimental para um formato plenamente automatizado, apresentando tempos de análise apreciavelmente curtos, alto poder de resolução e eficiência inigualável. São inúmeras as classes de compostos passíveis de análise por eletroforese capilar. Além das biomoléculas tradicionais como aminoácidos, proteínas, bases, nucleotídeos, fragmentos de PCR, DNA, oligossacarídeos, a separação de compostos farmacêuticos em geral, metabólitos em urina e plasma/soro sangüíneo, produtos naturais de aplicação cosmetológica, derivados do leite e da carne, aditivos para alimentos, polímeros, pesticidas, íons inorgânicos, etc., têm sido amplamente estudada. A eletroforese capilar encontra-se hoje, em estágio acelerado de evolução. As inúmeras publicações na área desde a implementação da técnica em 1979 demonstram, sem equívocos, que a eletroforese capilar ocupa um lugar de destaque, entre as técnicas de separação de maior recurso e versatilidade.

The scientific program will feature the most recent developments, theoretical aspects and applications in all areas of capillary electrophoresis (free solution capillary electrophoresis, FSCE, micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography, MECC, capillary gel electrophoresis, CGE and capillary electrochromatography, CEC) as well as the developments in injection and detection systems, emphasizing hiphenated techniques such as CE-MS, strategies for sensitivity enhancement and pre-concentration techniques.

O programa científico abrangerá desenvolvimentos recentes, aspectos teóricos e aplicações em todas as áreas da eletroforese capilar (eletroforese de zona em solução livre, FSCE, cromatografia eletrocinética micelar, MECC, eletroforese capilar em gel e polímeros, CGE e eletrocromatografia CEC), assim como avanços nos sistemas de injeção e detecção, enfatizando técnicas hifenadas, como eletroforese capilar acoplada à espectrometria de massas, (CE-MS), estratégias para aumento de sensibilidade, e técnicas de pré-concentração.

At Sunday, November 29, before the opening ceremony, there will be offered simultaneously two short-courses: Overview on Capillary Electrophoresis and Biological Mass Spectrometry. The short-course on capillary electrophoresis will be taught by Dr. Norberto Guzman, symposium chairman and research fellow at The R. W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute, New Jersey, USA and it will cover the following aspects: mechanisms of separation, instrumentation, optimization strategies and applications. The course on mass spectrometry will be taught by Dr. Keith Jennings, emeritus professor at the Department of Biological Sciences, Warnick University, Coventry, UK. The course will describe the types of spectrometers, sample-inlet systems, modes of ionization, detectors and applications.

No domingo, dia 29 de novembro, antes da abertura oficial do evento, será oferecido um mini-curso introdutório sobre eletroforese capilar, Overview on Capillary Electrophoresis, descrevendo os vários mecanismos de separação, eletroforese de zona em solução livre (CZE, FSCE), em micelas (MECC) e em gel (CGE, SDS-PAGE), eletrocromatografia (CEC), focalização isoelétrica (CIEF), e isotacoforese (CITP), detalhes da instrumentação (injeção, pré-concentração, detecção e estratégias para aumento de sensibilidade), otimização de separações e aplicações. O curso será ministrado pelo Dr. Norberto Guzman, presidente do evento e renomado pesquisador da R. W. Johnson Pharmaceutical Research Institute, Raritan, New Jersey, USA, que vem contribuindo de forma significativa para o desenvolvimento da técnica e sua divulgação na América Latina. Em paralelo, um segundo mini-curso será oferecido no mesmo horário, Biological Mass Spectrometry. O curso de espectrometria de massas (CE-ESI-MS) é uma cortesia da Micromass e, será ministrado pelo Prof. Dr. Keith Jennings, professor emérito de espectrometria de massas, Department of Biological Sciences, Warwick University, Coventry, UK. O curso irá descrever os tipos de espectrômetros de massas, modos de ionização, sistemas de acoplamento de um espectrômetro de massas e um sistema de eletroforese capilar, com ênfase na interface eletrospray (ESI), tratamento de dados e aplicações gerais e biológicas.

Posters of contributed papers should be written in English and a corresponding abstract will be compiled in the book of abstracts. The dimensions of the poster boards are 100 cm x 150 cm (width x height). All posters must be afixed from 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 29 and should be displayed for the whole duration of the symposium. Two poster presentation sessions are planned during the symposium in which the presenting authors are kindly asked to be present for discussion of their results.

Pôsters exibindo trabalhos aceitos estarão em exposição durante todo o decorrer do simpósio, e deverão ser afixados no domingo dia 29/11 a partir das 16:30 hs. Duas sessões de discussão de 2h cada estão programadas para os dias 30/11 e 01/12, onde é solicitada a presença dos autores no local de exposição. Um resumo do trabalho de cada pôster, em inglês, deverá ser submetido para avaliação pelo comitê científico e, constará no livro de resumos.
